Kitchen Update

I'm too depressed and in too much pain to update on the saga of my SPD. Instead, some good news! The kitchen is rattling on apace, here's a few work-in-progress pics! :-)

In more good news, potty training is going really well - we finally has our first loo poo today. Hurrah!

The SPD saga

So, looks like I have SPD. Ironic as when I was diagnosed with SPD, it was blatantly a kidney infection. Now I have pain that matches SPD, and it takes weeks to get a diagnosis of SPD (after being fobbed off with a "er it's something musculoskeletal, not sure what...")

Anyway, things have suddenly moved on apace:

Yesterday, 2pm:
See the midwife (not my usual one but a bloody brilliant one who listened and actually did the simple things she's meant to like measuring my fundal height etc. But anyway, I digress...) and I lose it a bit. Tell her about weeks of worsening pain. She agrees it's probably SPD and that I need to see an obstetric Physio, makes a note on my medical notes and tells me to get a referral from my GP ASAP.

I head to reception to make the appointment, only to be told the next GP appointment is mid July! I tell her that's not good enough, and promised to get the doctor to call me.

Yesterday, mid afternoon:
Doctor calls and books me in for 4.30

Yesterday, 4.30:
Doc confirms the suspected SPD diagnosis and refers me to the standard midwives. *sigh*. He tells me it will take 48 hours - fair enough

Today, lunchtime:
I return a missed call to the Alcester physios (how speedy are they!?) and have a catch up with my old physio who looked after me up here post-accident. She advises I really need to be seen by an obstetric Physio (surprise surprise) and goes through several complicated options for getting referred on. I mention I'm on my way to the Alex to get my bloods done, and she suggests trying to get my referral taken on by the Alex's physios - a long shot, but worth a try.

Today, mid afternoon:
I pick up my referral from the Alcester physios and take it up to the Alex. Firstly they tell me I need to be referred by my midwife. I say no, I have a doctors referral and I'm not getting referred again. Then they try and get me to come to a group class. I say no, I need to be seen and assessed, not given a class (that can come later). So they finally have in and gave me an appointment for this Friday - WIN! If at first you don't succeed... keep bloody badgering!

Not 100% sure it's with an obstetric Physio but at least it's a start and in the right place! Let's hope they can do something!!!

On another positive note, I decided to be brave and take Dylan to the hospital in pants not pull ups. He was a STAR! I took the potty with us (I had a big bag!) and, amidst all the excitement of 'the hopsital' he managed to use it whilst I went for a wee - well done Dylies!

Bump Watch @ 27 weeks - welcome to the third trimester

Eeeek! It's only going to get more whale-like, swollen and sore from here on in, but the end is in sight! WHOOP!

It's all pandemonium here. Thursday morning Dad rang to say his job had been cancelled and would we like our kitchen fitted... Immediately! :-D So in 48 hours we've ripped most of the old kitchen out and got the sparky in. Today the new kitchen arrives and the new ceiling goes up! Eeek! It's very exciting but very tiring in my condition! It's funny, the Birch house kitchen went in around this stage in my last pregnancy. I seem to be fated to be a heavily pregnant kitchen fitter's assistant. (I know what to do if I ever want another new kitchen, get pregnant!

In other news, off to t'Avery's hen night tomorrow am. Finally found an outfit, but still need shoes - will have to sneak off to the shops!

Anyway, here's today's bump watch and a pic of our kitchen as it was about 20 hours ago - I've since ripped out half of the base units.

Bump Watch @ Week 25 and 26

Once again a double whammy of bump watch, and the last two of the second trimester. EEEEEK!

News in brief: nursery is painted and partially sorted (hooray); gradually unpacking all the baby stuff and washing baby clothes (which with potty training is killing my washing machine!); and Dylan is doing BRILLIANTLY at potty training - we're in day three and so far, touch wood, we're accident free!

See you in the third trimester! :-)

Bump Watch @ 23 and 24 weeks - we're viable!

I've been ill. Dyl's been ill. Blah blah blah grump. Excuse for late posting of bump watch pics blah blah...

*ahem* Sorry...

Ok, so that's out the way! The good news is we're viable! This means should she put in an early entrance, she stands some chance of surviving - phew! As much as I'd love to meet her now, I'd rather she stayed put for many more weeks!

In the mean time, I've been picking up bits from sale rails and charity shops, and have sorted through loads of lively clothes from my friend Kerrie and my sister in law Becky. Once it's all laid out in drawers I'll post a pic or two as, what with Dylan's unisex bits (and some tomboyish bits), this little lady is building up a nice little wardrobe!

Anyway, more on that soon! In other news, the nursery is nearly decorated so pics of that to follow too!

For a house of ill people, we've been very busy!!!

Bump watch @ 22 weeks

Forgot to post this, mostly because I've spent the last week in agony with my leg/pelvis. Doctor's diagnosis? "possibly something muscular-skeletal". Helpful...

The minx and the very, very nice man

Well it seems our probably-daughter in a right little minx. Note the use of 'probably-daughter' AGAIN. After a calamitous time getting to the scan, my darling little one was an awkward sod AGAIN, lying in the worst possible position. They finally got her heart outflows but, when it came to gender, the little monkey sat with her hand on her groin! Our lovely sonographer still reckons she's probably a girl, but can't be 100% sure.

It's been quite a day today. As I left work at 12.30, I promptly had a massive puncture right in the middle of the busy but narrow Kenilworth road. So dangerous was the spot I broke down in, that I had to turn the car round and limp it back on the flat tyre back to work. Cue a very frantic call to the AA and, bless them, get had a very very nice man out to me within 45 minutes. I made it to the hospital just three minutes late. However after an hour's wait I found out they'd got one of my voicemails an rescheduled my appointment to 3.20 - AAAAARGH!

So yes, a bit of a day...

Bump watch - 20 weeks - half way!

Well we've made it to 20 weeks with our probably-pink bun in the oven! Yey!

Scan pics @ 20 weeks

Three of the best we could get considering the little monkey was mucking around...

Our eventful twenty week scan

Well THAT was interesting!! The little sod was in a terrible position. The hospital brought in additional scanning procedure this week, predominantly additional heart scanning. Guess who is the first person who they couldn't get a clear scan of and is being recalled in two weeks? Despite lying in a crap position, they've managed to check everything and everything looks ok. However the bad position extended to the 'bottom half' view. However, it's looking, thought not 100%, like a....

GIRL!
So not so much blue or pink but purpley-pink!

We've got to go back for a follow up scan on 3rd May, so hopefully she'll (yes, I'm going to go with she for now) give us a better view then - top and bottom!

Bump watch pic to follow in the morning...

Half way... Yikes!!!

Wow. Half way. Blimey.

Scan at 2pm today and very nervous! I've not really worried this pregnancy, but now I'm terrified - what if there's something wrong? Not having had a major road accident this time, it would be sods law if something went wrong with this 'normal' pregnancy. Very excited about finding out if it's a girl or boy, but mostly I'm doing 19.5 weeks worrying over the past 48 hours...

In other news, congratulations to the Goodisons who welcomed baby Wren Blossom into the world on Sunday! Yey! :-D

Freaking out!!!

Well, I’m officially freaking out today. As the Kearn family welcome their daughter Madison Rose into the world, suddenly my bun in the oven is feeling all too real. Today I’ve been flooded with emotions (I’m mostly blaming the hormones I’ve decided.) Will we be able to cope with two? Will Dylan get on with his brother or sister? Will Dylan be end up a bit neglected by only having half my attention? Can I cope with sleepless nights again? Will I go a bit crazy again? Will I go more crazy this time? Will number two be harder than Dylan?

See, I’m a big bag of crazy and mental today… *sigh*

I’m just trying to focus on this time next week, when hopefully be in the scan room having our 20 week scan and finding out what flavour this rapidly-expanding bump is.

In the meantime, congrats once again to the Kearns – we can’t wait to meet her!

Bump Watch - 19 weeks

Ok, so I've been officially crap at blogging this time round but:

a) I'm running round after a two year old.
b) Holding down two jobs where as last time I was laid up with a shattered leg
c) I have a house like a builder yard and a new allotment.
d)... Ok I'll stop now. Can you tell I'm feeling guilty? I'm just so busy and so permanently knackered, the 'blog guilt' is just the icing on the cake :-(

In happier news, our lovely friends the Kearn's will be welcoming their daughter into the world today - BLOODY EXCITING!!! Good luck to them and I can't wait to meet Miss Kearn asap!

Right, one tired and moody bump watch pic coming up. I can't believe it's a week until our 20 week scan. I'll finally be able to stop going "she, I mean he/she" an will have the fun of probably telling people that despite being utterly convinced it's a girl, it's actually a boy after all... :-)

Bump Watch - 18 weeks and other random bemoanings

Less than a fortnight now until my scan and we get to find out the 'flavour' of my bump. As I'm constantly craving anything sweet (and I've never had a sweet tooth) and orange juice, the old wives tales say pink; but who knows...

It's been an 'interesting' week. Alex and I have had the week of and have been leisurely tackling various DIY jobs such as erecting a lovely purple shed, sorting the office and making Dylan fall in love with a lawn mower... as you do.

I've also been in increasing amounts of pain, which is fun, culminating in a late night trip to the out of hours docs and a tentative diagnosis of SPD. I won't go into what this now, a I'm on my way to a rather nice Good Friday lunch at Granny and Grancher's, and my mind is somewhat elsewhere! What I would say thought, is I'm a bit doubtful about the diagnosis. I'm also Hopi g it's wrong as it has the possibility to hang around for the rest of the pregnancy and, worst case scenario, become quite debilitating.

Hence why I'm thinking about lunch. Hmmm food....

Anyway, here's the bump watch pic plus our new shed and Dylan as the 'Pied Piper of lawn mower'.

Happy Easter!

Boy or Girl? - let the Internet quizzes decide... again!

We've been playing with the doppler tonight, listening to little Lemoni Sidney kidney bean's heartbeat (yes, I know the nickname is getting longer and more ridiculous but she's the size of a Lemon and I LOVE Captain Corelli's Mandolin.)

ANYWAY, we counted a heartbeat of around 162 beats per minute, which I vaguely remembered being and 'old wives tale' sign of having a girl, (which matches my gut instinct, but we'll find out on 19th April.)

Then I remembered this post from when we were expecting Dylan: http://frombeantobump.blogspot.com/2009/07/boy-or-girl-let-internet-quizzes-decide.html?m=1 (sorry my phone won't let me post that as a proper link for some reason)

It would be rude not to redo the tests eh, especially as they were so accurate *cough*. Here goes...

Quiz 1 - About.com

You answered 4 items out of 10 Yes.
Your score is 40%. Congratulations! According to the Old Wives it's a girl!

So girl 1, boy 0 (same as with Dylan... a boy)

Quiz 2 - Childbirth.org

You have a 29% chance of having a boy.
And you have a 70% chance of having a girl. (once again that only adds up to 99%, so I'm assuming there's a 1% it's a cat, or a monkey...?)

And Here's Why...
You are carrying the extra weight out front, so it's a boy. (no it's because I'm BLOODY PREGNANT)
The hair on your legs is not growing any faster during your preganacy, so it's a girl.
Boys are carried low. You are going to have a boy.
Sleeping in a bed with your pillow to the south indicates that you will be having a girl. (no, it's the only way my bed fits in my bedroom)
Your feet are not colder than they were before pregnancy. You are having a girl.
You refuse to eat the heel of a loaf of bread. You are having a girl. (I won't eat it when I'm not pregnant)
Dad-to-be hasn't been gaining weight along with Mom-to-be, so it will be a girl. (or he's on a diet and in the middle of a school musical?)
The maternal grandmother has gray hair, so a boy will be born.
You had morning sickness early in pregnancy, so you are expecting a girl.
You are looking particularly good during pregnancy. Therefore, it must be a boy, because girls steal their mother's looks.
Your chest development has been quite dramatic during pregnancy. You should expect a girl.
Since the sum of the mother's age at conception and the number of the month of conception is an odd number, it will be a girl.
Your urine is a dull yellow color, so you will have a girl.
You have a craving for salty or sour foods, which means that it is a boy.
Your nose hasn't changed during pregnancy, which indicates a girl.
You have been craving fruits, so it is a girl.
Your baby's heart rate is 140 or more beats per minute, so it's a girl.

2 nil to the girls...

Quiz 3 - GoodToKnow.co.uk
5a's and 9b's means... *drumroll*...

It's a girl!
You answered mostly 'b's, which means you're more likely to be carrying a baby girl.

So all three say girl. You watch, he'll be a boy now!

Lemon

See, these posts are like buses - wait long enough and three come along at once!

(you can tell I'm in bed bored can't you? I haven't got the energy to get out of bed, so I'm going get post-tastic instead! Anyway...)

It looks like Sidney kidney bean is a lemon... the size of a lemon that is.

Here's what's occurin' (sorry was tragically desperate to have an entire sentence of apostrophes, as you were...):

"This week's big developments: your baby can squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck her thumb!

Thanks to brain impulses, your baby's facial muscles are getting a workout as her tiny features form one expression after another. Though you can't feel her tiny punches and kicks yet, your little one's hands and feet are more flexible and active. (er, whatever!)

Your baby's kidneys are producing urine, which she releases into the amniotic fluid around her. She'll continue to do this until birth. Your baby's liver starts making bile this week. That's a sign that it's doing its job right. And the spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells.

In other news: your baby's stretching out. From head to bottom, she measures nearly 9cm, about as long as a lemon (see, told you!) She weighs around 43g. Her body's growing faster than her head and she now has a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, your baby's arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion with the rest of her body. Her legs still have some catching up to do (he/she'll match Dylan then...)

All over your baby's body an ultra-fine, downy layer of hair, called lanugo, is starting to develop."

From the BabyCenter iPhone app

No wonder I'm so bloody tired....

Movement

Definitely getting movement today :-). I'd forgotten how utterly strange it is to have something moving in your belly, even if it's only small at the moment.

Bloody love it!!! :-)

(right, I'm off to bed. And when I say "off to bed" I'm lying, I've been in bed since 6pm. Exhaaaausted!)

The 11w 5d fear

It was on the fifth day, of the the eleventh week of my pregnancy with Dyl that I had a major road accident that nearly cost me my leg and my baby, and led to two weeks in hospital, four surgeries and most of my pregnancy on crutches and in a leg brace.

Today is my fifth day, of the eleventh week of this pregnancy - and by god I've been driving carefully!

Thursday, I will hit 12 weeks and a week today will be my '12 week' scan. Hopefully today is the start of things getting better and easier. Unlike last time!

Here's to a 'normal' pregnancy... Hopefully!!!!

New look blog!

Ooooh new look with jelly beans. Sexy eh?

First trimester blues...

Not been blogging much as I generally just feel so ill, tired and depressed. Even seeing Sidney Kidney Bean on the scan hasn't really perked me up.

I have one quite major issue at the moment - I have quite a clear bump. I'm not even 11 weeks yet and I've just been maternity clothes shopping with mum (belated birthday present, she's an utter star!). Looks like I'll be in maternity work trousers this week, and thank his I'm the only one in my office this week (though the loneliness isn't going to help my current state of blues.)

Still two weeks to my scan, and two weeks until I can 'come out'...

:-(

Wednesday, 1 February 2012

Bump Watch @ the BBC - Days 57 to 63

The foetal sac is now the size of a hen's egg. The foetus inside is three centimetres long - the size of a jelly baby! Some of the chorionic villi will now disappear, leaving others to grow and become the placenta. Eyes and ears develop rapidly at this time, and the beginnings of the skeleton are present. Your baby's heart has four chambers and beats twice as fast as yours. Muscles are developing so a scan would now show real movement. Amazing.

Wrong dates

Well what a surprise, my dates are wrong! Had the booking apt with the midwife today, who reckons I'm due 8th Sept and 9 weeks tomorrow, not today. Ah well, who knows!

Anyway, I'm booked and have my maternity notes now - very odd! Looks like I'm going to be consultant led due to Dylan's C-section. Hopefully that won't entail too many hospital trips!

Next stop - dating scan! :-)

Poor Dylan

After a fortnight of feeling like death, I'm amazed at how well Dylan is coping. On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons I tend to feel dreadful, so post-nursery, Dylan is mostly left to entertain himself whilst I lie on the sofa. The guilt is overwhelming. Fortunately he will play on his own, topped up with a generous application of Peppa Pig on DVD. But I feel awful! We never go out at the mo, and trips to the park are heavily curtailed. To quote one of Dylan's favourite phrases... "poor Dylan!"

Week 8... And we have a scan date!

Tuesday 28th Feb - that's our dating scan date. WHOOP! At 12w6d it's not as bad as I expected, but still a seemingly epoch away!

Baby center says....

New this week: webbed fingers and toes are poking out from your baby's hands and feet and your baby's tail is just about gone. Your baby's eyelids are practically covering her eyes, and breathing tubes extend from the throat to the branches of the developing lungs. In the brain, nerve cells are beginning to connect with one another.

You may be daydreaming about your baby as one sex or the other, but if you could see inside your uterus you wouldn't get any clues. Your baby's external genitals still haven't developed enough to reveal whether you're having a boy or a girl. Either way, your baby is about the size of a kidney bean, and is constantly moving and shifting, though it will be weeks before you can feel it.

Monday, 23 January 2012

More belated week 7 stuff:

From the Baby Center app:

Your baby - The big news this week: hands and feet are emerging from your baby's developing arms and legs. They look more like paddles at this point than the tiny, pudgy extremities you're daydreaming about holding and tickling.

Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo. He has the remains of a small tail, which is an extension of the tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks, but that's the only thing getting smaller. Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry.

If you could see inside your uterus, you'd spot eyelid folds partially covering your baby's eyes, which already have some colour. You'd also see the tip of his nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin.

Your baby has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the hormone insulin to aid digestion. A loop in your baby's growing intestines is bulging into his umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from your baby's tiny body.

Your body - Your uterus has doubled in size in the past five weeks, and eating may feel like a chore. It doesn't help if you are also feeling bloated, too. The cause? It's those hormones again.

During pregnancy you have much higher levels of progesterone. This hormone relaxes smooth muscle tissue throughout your body, including your gastrointestinal tract. The result? Slower than normal digestion, which can cause wind and bloating, especially after a big meal.

Hectic!

Belated Bump Watch @ BBC - Days 43 to 49

Due to heading to crippling exhaustion, then heading to London for my birthday, I've only just got around to this..,.

"Your baby is experiencing a very busy time! The heart is really taking shape, along with the first blood vessels of the circulation system. Your baby's tooth buds, palate and tongue are forming too, while the ears continue to develop and eyelids are starting to cover your baby's eyes. This early period of development is very important as the basic structure of the body and all the organs are formed in the first 12 weeks."

Sunday, 15 January 2012

The return of the morning sickness

It looks like a week six has brought the inevitable morning sickness. It's hit me like a brick. Morning, noon, night I have been feeling like death; to the point I am now starting to worry how I'm going to cope with work. It was too much to hope I was going to get away with it? Meh, pass the ginger cordial!

Wednesday, 11 January 2012

Or, our little baked bean? Bump Watch @ the BBC - days 36 to 42

The fluid-filled space that was inside the blastocyst is now developing into the amniotic sac - the bag of waters that will protect your baby for the rest of your pregnancy - and break at the end! The embryo has a blood circulatory system that links with yours through the chorionic villi (the little fingers belonging to the cells embedded in the lining of your womb). Your baby's spine is starting to form, with the very beginnings of the central nervous system. Blood vessels are also forming into what will become the umbilical cord - the vital link between you and your baby.

Darling buds
Tiny little buds on the embryo are the first signs of your baby's arms and legs. Your baby's facial features are forming while depressions in the outline of the embryo show the early development of your baby's chest and body. Your baby's digestive system is starting to form too, beginning with the first cells of the stomach and the intestine. At this point your baby is no bigger than a baked bean - a bouncing baby bean!

Our little lentil

From the Baby Centre app - week 6

This week's major developments: The nose, mouth and ears that you'll spend so much time kissing in eight months' time are beginning to take shape. If you could see into your uterus, you'd find an oversized head and dark spots where your baby's eyes and nostrils are starting to form. Her emerging ears are marked by small depressions on the sides of the head, and the arms and legs by protruding buds.

Your baby's heart is beating about 100 to 160 times a minute, almost twice as fast as yours. Blood is beginning to course through her body. The intestines are developing, and the bud of tissue that will give rise to the lungs has appeared. The pituitary gland, which later on will secrete hormones, is forming, as are the rest of your baby's brain, muscles and bones. Right now, your baby is a quarter of an inch long, about the size of a lentil.

6 weeks today

... And I feel dreadful. Half way through the first trimester. Will post more stuff later when Dyl isn't whining and I feel more human! Zzzzzzzz......

Friday, 6 January 2012

Midwife referral

Well I'm referred, but booking is at 10 weeks now, so I'm a way off seeing the midwife. Seems from my letter that Ros has left! Also clinic is now Tuesday morning, my teaching morning, so not exactly sure how I'm going to work that one! Fun, fun...

Wednesday, 4 January 2012

Bump Watch @ the BBC - Days 29 to 35 - Your baby

"Your baby's now a tiny little blastocyst embedded into the lining of your uterus. The blastocyst is growing and developing thanks to nourishment from your blood system. The inner cell mass is forming the embryo. The ovary which gave up the egg continues to produce progesterone. This ensures the cells on the inside of the uterus support your pregnancy. Each cell builds up and thickens the lining, stimulating the production of hormones.

I'm a little tadpole...

The embryo is about two millimetres long. Tiny, but visible, and shaped something like a tadpole! Your baby's heart begins to beat. And major organs have started to develop. Facial features are starting to form too. Nostrils are becoming distinct and the earliest version of the part of the eyes that is sensitive to light (retinas) is forming. Wow!"

A - ma -ZING!

Ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm

This is tomorrow's entry on my Baby Centre Pregnancy app (week 5 baby!!) and I think its really fascinating:

Deep in your uterus your embryo is growing at a furious pace. At this point, your baby-to-be is about the size of a sesame seed and looks more like a tiny tadpole than a human. He's now made up of three layers:

the ectoderm
the mesoderm
the endoderm

These layers will later form all of your baby's organs and tissues.

In the top layer, the ectoderm, the neural tube is starting to develop. Eventually your baby's brain, spinal cord, nerves and backbone will sprout from here. This ectoderm will also go on to form your baby's:

skin
hair
nails
mammary and sweat glands
tooth enamel

Your baby's heart and circulatory system begin to form in the middle layer, or mesoderm. These are developing very quickly. This week, his tiny heart begins to divide into chambers and will start to beat and pump blood.

The mesoderm will also form your baby's:

muscles
cartilage
bone
subcutaneous (under skin) tissue

The third layer, or endoderm, will form your baby's:

lungs
intestines
urinary system
thyroid
liver
pancreas

In the meantime, early versions of the placenta and umbilical cord are already at work.

B&Q boy

Differences

It's funny, I knew I was pregnant with Dylan because I was very nauseous from the word go, before i even got that early positive test result, really early on! Yet so far, this time, I've hardly been nauseous at all. I know it's still very early days, but I feel very different. It seems nausea has been replaced with the sorest boobs in the world, catastrophic tiredness, paranoia, and being very emotional and hormonal! I wonder if in a few weeks time the pregnancies will become similar, or whether this will remain a very different experience?

Odd.

I need a cry. Or sleep. Or both.

See! Told you I was hormonal!

(I call it hormanalmental)

Bump Watch @ BBC Days 22-28

Thought I'd start up an old tradtion of this blog - tracking the pregnancy through the BBC pregnancy tracker. It seems they've gone weekly rather than daily now - cut backs I assume! Anyway, here we go!:

"Days 22 to 28 - Your baby in the making

A space forms inside the morula (the embryo at its early stage of development), as some cells clump together in the middle, and others are pushed to the edge. The morula is now known as the blastocyst. By now, the blastocyst has made its way to your womb and is ready to embed itself in the endometrium - or the lining of the uterus. At this point, it's still not visible to the naked eye. The cells of the trophoblast put out tiny projections like tiny little fingers, which are called the chorionic villi. These manage to burrow into the endometrium, breaking it down to help the embedding process. The embedded blastocyst now starts producing a hormone - chorionic gonadotrophin. This stops you having your period and shows in your urine. You're pregnant - yay!"

Yay! :-D
